In Fahrenheit 451, Guy Montag is a fireman. In this world, firemen don't put out fires, they start them. Books are banned, fun is valued too much, knowledge is frowned upon, and the government is corrupt and about to jump into nuclear war. Welcome to the future!
When Montag meets Clarisse Mcclellan, who's "seventeen and crazy," his world is flipped upside down. He begins reading books (the highest blasphemy), ignoring his duties, and getting ideas to bring the whole system down. Everything becomes even more mixed up when he realizes he doesn't love his wife, nor is he happy. He finally goes to Faber, an old man who misses the days when books were part of society, and they plot to start collapsing the system, from the inside!
As Montag carries out his plan, his betrayal is revealed, and he becomes an "enemy of the world." He finds the "Book People" in the woods and is welcomed as one of their own. Their motto? "You don't matter. The knowledge you carry is infinitely more important."
The book ends with Montag realizing what he has to offer to the world, and what he carries inside. He walks off with the Book People, just as a nuclear war starts...
